These baked turkey meatballs with cottage cheese solve the number one problem with turkey meatballs - they always come out dry. Not these ones! Cottage cheese melts right into the meat as it bakes, keeping every single meatball tender and juicy from the inside out. My three boys can sometimes be picky, and these disappear every single time I make them. That tells me everything I need to know!

I started adding cottage cheese to my meatballs after one too many batches that came out crumbly and dry. Turkey is leaner than beef, which is great for nutrition, but it needs a little help to stay moist. Cottage cheese is the ingredient that does the heavy lifting here. It blends right in during mixing, and once it bakes, you'd never even know it's there, just tender, flavorful meatballs every single time. My boys are proof of that. Sometimes they won't eat cottage cheese on its own, but they have cleaned their plates with these meatballs more times than I can count!

These are also incredibly versatile. Serve them over pasta, tuck them into a sub, or pile them on top of zucchini noodles for something lighter. I love making a big batch on Sunday so lunches and dinners are halfway done for the week. If you're a fan of easy high-protein dinners that the whole family will actually eat, my healthy chicken stroganoff is another one that hits that same satisfying, weeknight-friendly note!

    Nutrition at a Glance

    • Protein: Between the ground turkey, cottage cheese, egg, and Parmesan, these meatballs are seriously protein-packed. Protein helps keep you full, supports muscle repair, and steadies your energy throughout the day.
    • Lower in Fat: Lean ground turkey keeps the saturated fat low compared to traditional beef meatballs.
    • Calcium: Cottage cheese and Parmesan both contribute calcium, which supports strong bones and teeth!
    • Probiotics: Full-fat cottage cheese contains beneficial cultures that support gut health.

Ingredients You Need for These Oven Baked Turkey Meatballs

You only need a handful of simple ingredients for this one, and most of them are pantry staples!

Full-Fat Cottage Cheese: This is what keeps the meatballs moist and tender. Full-fat works best because it has more richness and blends smoothly into the mixture. Small curd or blended cottage cheese both work great.

Lean Ground Turkey: The protein base of these baked ground turkey meatballs. You can also use ground chicken if that's what you have on hand!

Parmesan: Adds a savory, salty depth that makes these taste really flavorful. Freshly grated melts in better, but pre-grated works too.

Italian Breadcrumbs: Help hold everything together and give the meatballs structure. For a gluten-free version, use gluten-free breadcrumbs!

Fresh Parsley: Adds brightness and a little freshness. You can swap in dried parsley in a pinch - use about 1 tablespoon.

Cottage Cheese vs. Ricotta in Meatballs

You might be wondering if you can just swap in ricotta instead of cottage cheese, and the answer is yes, you can! But there are a few differences worth knowing before you make the swap.

Texture: Cottage cheese has a slightly looser, wetter texture than ricotta. This actually works in your favor here because it adds extra moisture to the meatballs as they bake. Ricotta is a little denser and drier, so meatballs made with ricotta will be slightly firmer in texture.

Protein: Cottage cheese wins here by a good margin. A half cup of full-fat cottage cheese has roughly 12 to 14 grams of protein, while the same amount of ricotta has closer to 7 grams. If boosting protein is a priority for you, stick with cottage cheese!

Flavor: Ricotta has a mild, slightly creamy flavor that blends in beautifully. Cottage cheese is a little tangier, but once it's mixed into the meat with garlic, Parmesan, and herbs, you truly cannot taste a difference either way.

Fat Content: Full-fat versions of both work best in this recipe. They each add richness and help keep the meatballs from drying out in the oven.

Both options make a great meatball, so use what you have! I personally reach for cottage cheese every time because of the extra protein boost - it's just a small swap that adds up in a meaningful way, especially when I'm feeding three hungry boys who need to stay full!

    Dietary Substitutions

    • Gluten-Free: Swap the Italian breadcrumbs for a gluten-free variety or use almond flour.
    • Dairy-Free: This one is tricky since cottage cheese and Parmesan are both key players, but a dairy-free ricotta and nutritional yeast can work as swaps.
    • Ground Chicken: Works just as well as turkey if that's what you have in the fridge!

How to Make This Easy Baked Turkey Meatballs Recipe

turkey meatball mixture in a bowl

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 400°F. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and drizzle lightly with olive oil.

Step 2: In a large bowl, combine all the ingredients. Mix gently with your hands until just combined. Try not to overwork the mixture - this keeps the meatballs tender!

putting raw turkey meatball on sheet pan

Step 3: Using a cookie scoop or your hands, roll the mixture into balls about 1.5 inches in diameter, roughly 2 tablespoons each. You should get about 18 to 20 meatballs. Place them on the prepared baking sheet with a little space between each one.

Step 4: Bake for 18 to 20 minutes until the meatballs are golden on the outside and cooked through to an internal temperature of 165°F.

Step 5: Let the meatballs rest for 5 minutes before serving. Then pile them over pasta, zucchini noodles, cauliflower mash, or rice, or enjoy them with a dipping sauce!

Dietitian Tips for This Baked Turkey Meatballs Recipe

Don't skip the rest time. Letting the meatballs sit for 5 minutes after baking helps the juices redistribute. It makes a real difference in texture!

Use a cookie scoop. This keeps all your meatballs the same size so they cook evenly. No one wants some overcooked and some undercooked!

Check the internal temperature. A meat thermometer is your best friend here. You're looking for 165°F to know they're fully cooked through. This is especially important with turkey.

Mix gently. It's tempting to really work the mixture together, but overmixing makes meatballs tough and dense. Stir just until everything is combined and stop there.

This is a great way to sneak cottage cheese into kids who won't touch it. My boys have been going through a phase of not eating plain cottage cheese, but in these meatballs? They have no idea it's even in there. It completely disappears into the meat, and they're getting all the protein and calcium benefits without any of the texture they'd normally protest. If you have picky eaters at home, this one is a huge win.

Serve the components separately for picky eaters. If your kids are particular about sauces or toppings, keep the meatballs plain on their plate and let them dip on their own terms. A little marinara on the side goes a long way!

Make it a double batch. These reheat beautifully, so it's always worth making extra. I do this with my cranberry jalapeño turkey meatballs too - having meatballs ready in the fridge is such a time-saver during the week.

Boost the veggies. You can easily mix in finely grated zucchini or carrots to the meatball mixture. Squeeze out any excess moisture from the zucchini first, then stir it right in. The kids won't notice and you're getting in extra vegetables at dinner, which is always a win!

How to Serve These Baked Ground Turkey Meatballs

These easy baked turkey meatballs are incredibly versatile! Here are some of my favorite ways to serve them:

    • Over spaghetti or your favorite pasta with marinara sauce
    • On top of zucchini noodles for a lighter option
    • With cauliflower mash for a cozy, low-carb bowl
    • Over rice with a drizzle of sauce
    • In a meatball sub with melted mozzarella
    • On their own with marinara or a simple yogurt dipping sauce
    • Cut into smaller pieces for toddlers and little ones - they're soft enough to work great for baby-led weaning styles of eating!

No matter how you serve them, they always deliver. And if you're looking for more easy dinner recipes that work just as well for meal prep, you'll find plenty to love.

You can also top them with extra Parmesan and fresh parsley right before serving for a little extra flavor and color! My jalapeno popper turkey meatballs are another fun variation if you want to mix things up and add a little heat to your meatball rotation!

    Storage Suggestions

Refrigerator: Store leftover meatballs in an airtight container for up to 4 days. They reheat great in the microwave or in a pan with a little marinara sauce to keep them moist.

Freezer: These freeze beautifully! Let them cool completely, then freeze in a single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer-safe bag or container. They keep well for up to 3 months.

Reheat: Warm from frozen in the oven at 350°F for about 15 to 20 minutes, or thaw overnight in the fridge and reheat in the microwave. Adding a splash of water or marinara sauce helps keep them from drying out.

    Common Questions

Can I taste the cottage cheese in these meatballs?

Nope! The cottage cheese completely blends into the mixture and disappears during baking. You'd never know it was there, but it does a lot of work behind the scenes to keep the meatballs moist and tender. This is exactly why it works so well for kids who don't like cottage cheese on its own!

Do I need to blend the cottage cheese first?

No, you don't have to. If you're using small-curd cottage cheese, it mixes right in. If you prefer a smoother texture, you can give it a quick blend first, but it's totally optional.

Are these meatballs good for kids?

Yes, and this is one of my favorite things about them! They're soft, mild in flavor, and easy to cut into smaller pieces for little ones. They're also a great way to work cottage cheese into a meal for kids who would never eat it straight. My three boys eat these without a second thought, which is all the proof I need that this recipe works!
