Meet your new favorite brownie. These Gluten-Free Black Bean Brownies are deeply chocolatey, perfectly fudgy, and secretly made with a can of black beans for added nutrients. No funky flavor, no weird texture, just a really good brownie. My 3 boys (and husband) loved them and had no idea that there was a whole can of black beans in them!

Here's the thing about my approach to dessert: I'm all about indulging here and there. And I definitely believe a brownie should taste like a brownie. Rich, fudgy, a little gooey in the middle, studded with melty chocolate chips. But if I can sneak some extra nutrients into something that's traditionally not very healthy at all, I'm always going to do it.

That's exactly what's happening in these gluten free black bean brownies. Swapping out the all-purpose flour for black beans adds fiber and plant-based protein to every square, without changing the flavor one bit! They blend completely smooth, so all you taste is rich cocoa and chocolate.

    Nutrition at a Glance

    • 🫘 Protein: Black beans and eggs both contribute plant-based and complete protein, helping these brownies be a bit more satisfying than your average dessert.
    • 🌾 Fiber: Black beans are loaded with fiber, which supports digestion and helps slow down how quickly sugar hits your bloodstream.
    • 🥑 Healthy Fats: Avocado oil and almond flour bring in heart-healthy unsaturated fats that also help your body absorb fat-soluble nutrients.
    • 🍫 Antioxidants: Cocoa powder is rich in flavanols, plant compounds linked to heart and brain health.
    • 🍁 Naturally Sweetened: Maple syrup adds sweetness without relying on refined white sugar.

    Ingredients You Need

Ingredients needed to make black bean brownies.
    • Black beans: Drained and rinsed black beans blend completely smooth and replace most of the flour, adding fiber and protein with zero bean flavor.
    • Maple syrup: A natural sweetener that adds moisture and a hint of caramel flavor. Honey works as a substitute if that's what you have on hand.
    • Avocado oil: A neutral, heart-healthy oil that keeps the brownies moist. Melted coconut oil is a great substitute.
    • Vanilla extract: Rounds out the chocolate flavor and adds warmth.
    • Cocoa powder: Brings rich, deep chocolate flavor! Use a high-quality unsweetened cocoa for the best flavor.
    • Almond flour: Keeps these brownies naturally gluten-free while adding a boost of healthy fat.
    • Salt: Just a pinch to balance the sweetness and enhance the chocolate flavor.
    • Baking powder: Helps give the brownies a little lift so they aren't too dense.
    • Eggs: Provide structure and protein. For an egg-free version, see the substitutions below.
    • Chocolate chips: Folded into the batter and sprinkled on top for melty pockets of chocolate! Use dairy-free chocolate chips to keep these dairy-free.

    Dietary Substitutions

    • Gluten-Free: These brownies are naturally gluten-free as written, thanks to almond flour instead of wheat flour.
    • Dairy-Free: Swap in dairy-free chocolate chips, and you've got a fully dairy-free brownie since everything else in the recipe is already dairy-free.
    • Vegan: Replace the 2 eggs with 2 flax eggs (2 tablespoons ground flaxseed mixed with 5 tablespoons water, rested for 5–10 minutes), and use dairy-free chocolate chips.

How to Make Chocolate Black Bean Brownies

Hands pouring black beans into a food processor.

Step 1: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper. Add 15 ounces black beans, maple syrup, avocado oil, and vanilla extract to a food processor or blender. Blend until completely smooth. Add eggs to the blended mixture and pulse until just combined.

Cocoa powder and almond flour in a mixing bowl.

Step 2: Add cocoa powder, almond flour, salt, and baking powder to the food processor. Blend until a smooth, thick batter forms.

Adding chocolate chips to a brownie batter.

Step 3: Transfer the batter to a bowl and fold in ½ cup of the chocolate chips, divided. Reserve the remaining ¼ cup for topping.

Pour the batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Scatter the remaining chocolate chips over the top.

Finish baked black bean brownies before cutting into slices.

Step 4: Bake for 20-35 minutes until the edges are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with just a few moist crumbs. Let the brownies cool in the pan for at least 20 minutes before cutting.

    Dietitian Tips for Success

    • Don't skip the blending step. Make sure the black beans are completely smooth before adding the dry ingredients! Any leftover chunks will create a grainy texture instead of that classic fudgy brownie bite.
    • Let them cool fully before cutting. I know it's tempting to dig in right away, but these chocolate black bean brownies firm up significantly as they cool. Cutting too early will give you a gooey, falling-apart square instead of a clean, fudgy slice.
    • Double the batch and freeze extras. These freeze beautifully, so I like to make a double batch and tuck half away in the freezer. It's an easy way to always have a healthier dessert (or sweet snack) ready to go when a craving hits.
    • Boost the protein further if you want. If you're trying to get more protein into your day, stir a scoop of unflavored or chocolate protein powder into the batter along with the almond flour, adding a splash of milk if the batter feels too thick.

    Storage Suggestions

To store: Keep black bean brownies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days, or in the refrigerator for up to a week.

To freeze: Let the brownies cool completely, then wrap individual squares in plastic wrap and store in a freezer-safe bag or container for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature or warm in the microwave for 15–20 seconds.

To reheat: Pop a brownie in the microwave for about 10–15 seconds for that fresh-from-the-oven texture.

    Black Bean Brownie FAQs

Are black bean brownies actually healthy?

They're definitely a step up nutritionally from a traditional brownie, with more fiber and protein and less refined flour, but they're still a dessert sweetened with maple syrup and chocolate chips. Think of them as a "healthier treat" rather than a health food!

What do black beans do for brownies?

Once blended completely smooth, black beans replace most of the flour and add moisture, fiber, and plant-based protein, all without changing the chocolate flavor. They're also what gives these brownies their especially fudgy, dense texture.

    Can I double this recipe?

Yes! Just use a 9x13-inch pan instead of an 8x8-inch pan, and keep an eye on the bake time, since a larger, deeper pan will likely need a few extra minutes in the oven.

    Ingredients

    • 15 ounces black beans drained and rinsed
    • ½ cup maple syrup
    • ⅓ cup avocado oil
    • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
    • ¼ cup cocoa powder
    • 1 ½ cups almond flour
    • ¼ teaspoon salt
    • ½ teaspoon baking powder
    • 2 eggs
    • ¾ cup chocolate chips divided

    Instructions

    • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease an 8x8-inch baking pan or line it with parchment paper.
    • Add 15 ounces black beans, drained and rinsed, maple syrup, avocado oil, and vanilla extract to a food processor or blender. Blend until completely smooth, scraping down the sides as needed until black beans are completely blended.
    • Add eggs to the blended mixture and pulse until just combined.
    • Add cocoa powder, almond flour, salt, and baking powder to the food processor. Blend until a smooth, thick batter forms.
    • Transfer the batter to a bowl and fold in ½ cup of the chocolate chips, divided. Reserve the remaining ¼ cup for topping.

    Notes

    • Make sure the black bean mixture is completely smooth before adding the dry ingredients. Any leftover chunks will affect the texture.
    • Brownies will look slightly underdone in the center when they come out of the oven; they firm up significantly as they cool, so let them rest at least 20 minutes before cutting.
    • Store at room temperature for up to 3 days, in the fridge for up to a week, or freeze individual squares for up to 3 months.
    • For a dairy-free version, use dairy-free chocolate chips. Everything else in the recipe is already dairy-free.
    • To make these vegan, swap the 2 eggs for 2 flax eggs (2 tablespoons ground flaxseed + 5 tablespoons water, rested 5–10 minutes).
