These Cinnamon Roll Muffins bring the cozy aroma of classic cinnamon rolls right to your home, without the yeast, rolling, and waiting! They’re soft, fluffy, and topped with a creamy cinnamon glaze that tastes just like the inside of a cinnamon roll (arguably the best part!).

When I set out to make recipes that are originally indulgent like this one, I really want to give you all the warm, comforting flavors of real homemade cinnamon rolls but in a quick, nourishing package! These gluten free cinnamon roll muffins really hit the mark.

They are made with wholesome ingredients, balanced sweetness, and have a texture that’s tender and moist! I like to think of them as a little morning pick-me-up that satisfies your sweet tooth and your body at the same time.

    Nutrition at a Glance

    • Protein: Thanks to the Greek yogurt and egg, these muffins offer a satisfying boost of protein to keep you full and energized all morning long.
    • Fiber: Oat flour brings plenty of soluble fiber, which supports digestion and helps maintain steady blood sugar levels. No mid-morning crash here!
    • Healthy Fats: Avocado oil provides heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that help your body absorb vitamins and keep your muffins perfectly moist.
    • Natural Sweetness: Applesauce and a touch of maple syrup keep things naturally sweet without relying on refined sugar.

    Ingredients You Need

    • Oat Flour: Gives a hearty, wholesome texture. You can make your own by blending rolled oats until fine. Or substitute with an all-purpose gluten-free flour blend.
    • Baking Powder + Baking Soda: Help the muffins rise and stay fluffy.
    • Salt: Just a pinch balances the sweetness.
    • Cinnamon: Cinnamon gives these the quintessential taste of cinnamon rolls!
    • Unsweetened Applesauce: Adds natural sweetness and moisture. You can opt for mashed banana instead.
    • Avocado Oil: Keeps things tender without the heaviness of butter. Melted avocado oil would also go well here!
    • Egg: Provides structure and protein.
    • Vanilla Extract: For an added depth of flavor.
    • Cream Cheese: Creates the base of the iconic cinnamon roll glaze!
    • Plain Greek Yogurt: Adds protein and tang to the glaze!
    • Maple Syrup: Adds a touch of natural sweetness so that the glaze is just the right amount of sweet.

    Dietary Substitutions

    • Gluten-Free: Use certified gluten-free oat flour to ensure no cross-contamination.
    • Dairy-Free: Swap Greek yogurt and cream cheese for dairy-free versions (coconut-based or almond-based work great!).
    • Vegan: Use a flax egg (1 tablespoon flaxseed meal + 2.5 tablespoons water) and dairy-free swaps for yogurt and cream cheese.

How to Make Cinnamon Roll Muffins

    1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat the oven to 350°F and line a muffin tin with paper liners or lightly grease it.
    2. Measure the Dry & Wet Ingredients Separately: In a large bowl, whisk together the oat flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon, and salt. In a separate bowl, mix the applesauce, avocado oil, egg, and vanilla until smooth.
    3. Combine & Bake: Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and stir until just combined. Divide the muffin batter evenly into 10–12 muffin cups. Bake for 15–18 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean, then let the muffins cool completely before adding the glaze.
    4. Make the Glaze: To make the glaze, mix the softened cream cheese, Greek yogurt, cinnamon, vanilla, and maple syrup until smooth. Spread over the cooled muffins and enjoy!

    Dietitian Tips for Success

    • Measure your flour the right way. For the best texture, use the spoon and level method! Spoon the oat flour into your measuring cup, then level it off with the back of a knife. (Trust me, scooping straight from the bag can pack in too much flour and make your muffins dense!)
    • Make them ahead. As always, I love to double the recipe and freeze muffins individually, they reheat beautifully in the microwave!
    • Use an ice cream scoop or cookie dough scoop. For evenly sized muffins that bake up beautifully, use a greased ice cream scoop to portion the batter into each cup.
    • Line your pan! Cupcake liners make cleanup a breeze and prevent sticking, especially if you’re using less oil in the batter.

How to Serve Cinnamon Roll Muffins

These gluten-free cinnamon roll muffins are delicious on their own, but they really shine as part of a cozy breakfast or brunch spread. Pair one with a kiwi blackberry smoothie for a nutrient-packed start to your day! For weekends or special occasions, serve them alongside a breakfast charcuterie board filled with fresh fruit, nuts, and spreads, plus a batch of egg bites for a protein boost.

    Storage Suggestions

    • Room Temperature: Store any leftover cinnamon swirl muffins in an airtight container for up to 2 days.
    • Refrigerator: Keep for up to 5 days in an airtight container in the fridge. Reheat briefly in the microwave before serving.
    • Freezer: Freeze unglazed muffins for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight in the fridge, then glaze before serving.

    Frequently Asked Questions

What are the common mistakes with gluten free muffins?

The biggest mistake I see with gluten-free muffins is using the wrong measuring method for the flour. Gluten-free flours (like oat flour) are more delicate and dense than wheat flour, so scooping directly from the bag can pack in too much and lead to dry, heavy muffins. Always use the spoon and level method for accuracy.

What is the secret to a moist muffin?

Moisture comes down to balance: the right mix of fats, liquids, and not overbaking. In this recipe, applesauce and avocado oil add moisture without making the muffins greasy, and oat flour helps retain that soft, tender crumb. Be sure to bake just until a toothpick comes out clean and avoid overbaking!

    Can I skip the glaze?

Of course! These easy cinnamon roll muffins are delicious on their own, but the glaze adds that cinnamon roll magic.
