Maybe you have seen the Jimmy Dean Sausage Wontons recipe on TikTok - make these instead for a healthier version! I am always looking for ways to increase the nutrition in a recipe, after all I am a Dietitian! I definitely do not hate Jimmy Dean, but they don’t have turkey sausage. So you’ll have to go with Jenni-O or another brand to make one of my favorite appetizers. You get the comforting ooey-gooey melted cheese and sausage and the PERFECT crunch from the golden brown wonton cups.

These Turkey Sausage Wontons are pretty popular in my group of friends - year round! These would also be perfect for the football season - hello Super Bowl! They are so easy to make and I actually got the inspiration from one of my friends. The original recipe was passed down to her from her mom and she makes them for really any gathering that we have. Spoiler alert - the whole friend group drools over them!

Ingredients Needed for Healthier Version of Jimmy Dean Sausage Wontons Recipe
Use a clear shot of the ingredients for this recipe, prepped, and labeled if necessary. Add a paragraph of content describing why these ingredients were chosen. Insert the ingredients into the list below, omitting quantities.

- Wonton wrappers - I used vegan wonton wrappers - definitely not required but that is what my grocery store had!
- Greek yogurt - the original recipe called for Ranch dressing and I wanted to make the recipe healthier, so I mixed Greek yogurt for some extra protein and mixing that with the dry Ranch seasoning mix.
- Dry Ranch seasoning mix - I love making my own Ranch dressing seasoning! So I usually mix the seasoning with Greek yogurt and a little bit of mayo, sometimes a dab of sour cream. For this recipe, I just did Greek yogurt though.
- Red bell pepper - You can do whatever bell pepper color you like most! I love red bell peppers.
- Black olives - I used canned, sliced black olives then chopped them up even more.
- Mexican cheese - You don’t necessarily need Mexican cheese but I think some sort of cheddar cheese blend would work best for this recipe!
- Turkey sausage - The original recipe called for pork sausage, to cut back on saturated fat I chose to switch to turkey sausage.
See recipe card for quantities.
How to Make Healthier Version of Jimmy Dean Sausage Wontons Recipe
Prep the oven - Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.
Bake the wontons - Mold the wonton wrappers in a muffin pan (you can also use a mini muffin pan but I prefer regular) and spray with cooking spray (I use avocado oil). Bake for about 8-10 minutes or until the wontons start turning golden brown.
Make the Ranch dressing - While the wontons are baking, mix together the Greek yogurt and dry Ranch seasoning mix in a small bowl. Set aside.
Mix together the filling - In a medium to large bowl, combine sausage, small pieces of red bell pepper, black olives, and Mexican cheese. Add the dressing mix in and stir until well mixed.
Fill the wontons - Once the wontons are finished, place on a cookie sheet. Spoon the filling into the baked shells (the center of the wonton wrapper) and bake at 375 degrees F for about 12 minutes or until the mixture is heated through. Enjoy!
Hint: Brown sausage in a large skillet over medium-high heat prior to starting the recipe. Once done, drain sausage or lay it on a paper towel to get rid of any excess oil.
Substitutions/Variations
Garnish - Slice up some green onions and garnish the wontons - it will add a nice pop of color to it!
Add some extra flavor - Onion powder and garlic powder are always safe spices to add to dishes if you are looking for more flavor! Soy sauce or Worcestershire sauce would also be great additions! For extra spice add red pepper flakes.
Change up the meat - The original recipe calls for spicy pork sausage but Italian sausage would also be drool-worthy! I chose turkey sausage to cut back on the saturated fat and to make this recipe a little bit more nutritious!
Make it vegetarian - Replace the turkey sausage with sauteed mushrooms!
Nutrition
In my opinion, I made some changes to the original recipe to make it healthier but it still has a great taste and honestly tastes VERY similar to the recipe.
By using ground turkey sausage for the sausage fillings, you cut back on saturated fats that are found in animal products. While there is still saturated fat in the recipe it has been reduced, with this switch and replacing the ½ cup of Hidden Valley Ranch with a Greek yogurt-based ranch dressing.
I am always looking on ways to make recipes healthier, and yes - appetizers can be healthy too! Here are some of the health benefits of these Turkey Sausage Wontons.
Plain Greek yogurt - A high-quality protein with calcium, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin B12.
- Gut-friendly probiotics!
Turkey sausage - Is also a great animal protein source that is lower in saturated fats compared to other sausages.
Red bell peppers - Rich in vitamins and minerals!
- Packed with vitamin C and vitamin A
Storage
Store any leftovers of these Turkey Sausage Wontons in an airtight container. Store in the refrigerator for up to 3-4 days.
Ready to reheat them? Reheat it in the oven at 350 degrees F for a few minutes or pop them into the air fryer for just a minute (my favorite way to reheat them!)
