As a dietitian and a mom, I’m always looking for meals that feel realistic for everyday life! These Honey Mustard Chicken Bowls are easy to make, packed with flavor, and balanced enough that I feel good serving them to my family again and again.

Chicken pieces, rice, and broccoli served in a white bowl.

This honey mustard chicken rice bowl recipe hits the sweet spot between super delicious and simple to make. With juicy honey mustard chicken, roasted broccoli with crispy edges, and fluffy rice to tie it all together, you've got an easy meal with everything you need in each bite!

And if you’ve got picky eaters? The chicken alone usually wins them over, which is a huge parenting win in my book.

I also love that this recipe uses simple pantry staples and a single sheet pan. Minimal prep, minimal cleanup, and flavors that feel familiar but still exciting. It’s one of those meals that works just as well for feeding your family as it does for meal prep lunches later in the week!

    Nutrition at a Glance

    • Protein: Chicken breast provides protein to support muscle repair, satiety, and steady energy levels.
    • Healthy Fats: Avocado oil adds heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that help with nutrient absorption.
    • Fiber: Broccoli contributes fiber for gut health and digestion.
    • Carbs: Rice provides carbohydrates to fuel your brain and body, especially helpful for active days.

    Ingredients You Need

    • Broccoli Florets: A fiber- and vitamin C–rich veggie that roasts beautifully! Cauliflower is a great swap.
    • Chicken Breasts: Lean protein that cooks quickly, especially when diced up. Chicken thighs work if you prefer juicier meat, but definitely dice them up as well so they cook in time with the broccoli.
    • Avocado Oil: High smoke point and neutral flavor! You can also use olive oil if you prefer.
    • Honey: Adds natural sweetness and helps the chicken caramelize. It wouldn’t be honey mustard without the honey!
    • Dijon Mustard: Brings tang and depth! Yellow mustard is milder but still works.
    • Garlic: Adds extra flavor to the chicken. Garlic powder can be used in a pinch.
    • Cooked Rice: A satisfying base! You can try brown rice, quinoa, or cauliflower rice if preferred.
    • Salt & Pepper: To season!

    Dietary Substitutions

    • Gluten-free: This recipe is naturally gluten-free, just double-check your mustard label.
    • Dairy-free: No dairy here as written.
    • Vegetarian/Vegan: Swap the chicken for roasted chickpeas, tofu, or tempeh, and use maple syrup instead of honey!

How to Make Honey Mustard Chicken Bowls

    1. Preheat & Prep: Preheat the oven to 425°F and line a large sheet pan with parchment paper.
    2. Make the Honey Mustard Sauce: In a bowl, whisk together the honey, Dijon mustard, garlic, 2 tablespoons of the avocado oil, and a pinch of salt and pepper.
    3. Coat the Chicken: Add the diced chicken to the bowl and toss until well coated. Spread the chicken on one side of the sheet pan.
    4. Season the Broccoli: Toss the broccoli with the remaining 1 tablespoon avocado oil, plus a little salt and pepper, and spread it on the other side of the pan.
    5. Roast: Roast for 18–22 minutes, stirring once halfway through, until the chicken is cooked through and the broccoli is tender with crispy edges.
    6. Serve & Enjoy: Serve the honey mustard chicken and broccoli over your cooked rice and add an extra drizzle of sauce if desired.

    Dietitian Tips for Success

    • Don’t overcook the chicken! Chicken breast can dry out quickly, especially when diced. Keep an eye on it toward the end of cooking and pull it as soon as it’s cooked through to keep it juicy and tender.
    • Use this as a flexible base recipe. This honey mustard chicken bowl works well with whatever grains or veggies you have on hand. Swapping rice for quinoa or broccoli for green beans won’t change the overall nutrition balance much, which makes this an easy repeat meal.
    • Make it work for picky eaters. If needed, serve the chicken separately from the broccoli and rice. Keeping components separate can help kids feel more comfortable trying new foods without pressure!
    • Prep extra for future meals. Doubling the recipe is a great strategy if you’re already turning on the oven. Leftovers reheat well and make quick lunches or dinners on especially busy days!

How to Serve A Honey Mustard Chicken Bowl

Because these bowls are served with rice, broccoli, and honey mustard chicken, there isn’t much you have to do to them. However, you can easily customize them by adding things like sliced avocado, roasted sweet potatoes, or extra steamed veggies! You can also serve with a side salad like my arugula salad with ginger dressing.

    Storage Suggestions

    • Refrigerator: Store leftover honey mustard chicken rice bowls in an airtight container for up to 4 days. You can store everything together and reheat together before eating.
    • Freezer: Freeze the chicken and broccoli separately from the rice for up to 2 months.
    • Reheat: Warm in the microwave or on the stovetop until heated through. Add a splash of water to keep everything moist!

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is honey mustard good on chicken?

Yes, honey mustard pairs really well with chicken because the sweetness balances the savory flavor of the meat. It also helps keep chicken moist while adding a lot of flavor with very little effort.

What goes well with honey mustard chicken?

Honey mustard chicken pairs well with simple sides like rice, roasted vegetables, or a fresh salad. Creamy elements like mashed potatoes or avocado also complement the sauce nicely!

    Can I use frozen broccoli?

Yes, frozen broccoli can be used, but it won’t get quite as crispy as fresh. Roast it straight from frozen and expect a softer texture with lightly browned edges.
