Sometimes, you just want a meal that’s cozy and fun without being fussy. That’s exactly why I love these Sloppy Joe Bowls! They’ve got all the flavors of a classic sloppy joe, but instead of being sandwiched between buns, everything gets layered into a hearty bowl with rice, sweet potato fries, and your favorite toppings.

Sloppy joe bowls in a white bowl topped with cheese, pickles, bell pepper and sweet potato fries.

I grew up with messy, saucy sloppy joes as a weeknight favorite, but these bowls feel like a fresher, more balanced take. They’re quick enough for a busy night, and I love that I can make a big batch of the meat and keep it in the fridge for lunches throughout the week. Not only do I love this bowl recipe, but it was actually a hit with my husband and kids, too!

From a nutrition perspective, this is a bowl I feel good about. You’ve got lean protein from ground chicken, fiber from whole-grain brown rice, and a boost of complex carbs from the sweet potato fries. Add in fresh veggies and a little cheese for good measure, and you’ve got a dinner that’s fun and balanced!

If you want a classic sloppy joe, try my healthier sloppy joes recipe instead!

    Nutrition at a Glance

    • Protein: Ground chicken provides a lean, high-quality protein source that helps keep you full.
    • Healthy fats: Avocado oil adds heart-healthy monounsaturated fats that are great for overall wellness.
    • Fiber: Whole grain brown rice and bell peppers provide fiber to support digestion and steady energy.

    Ingredients You Need

    • Avocado Oil: A healthy fat for sautéing. Olive oil works just as well.
    • Onion & Garlic: These aromatics start the flavor building process in the ground meat!
    • Ground Chicken: Lean, protein-packed, and lighter than beef. You can also use ground turkey or lean ground beef if you prefer.
    • Seasonings: You’ll need salt, ground black pepper and chili powder to spice up the chicken!
    • Ketchup & BBQ sauce: I use no-sugar added sauces to keep it healthier. This keeps the sauce flavorful without too much added sugar. Regular ketchup/BBQ work fine if that’s what you have!
    • Worcestershire Sauce & Mustard: Add tang and umami, just like a classic sloppy joe.
    • Red Wine Vinegar: A splash of acidity balances the richness. You could also use a splash of apple cider vinegar.
    • Sweet Potato Fries: The fun base! Frozen makes it easy, but you could use fresh roasted sweet potatoes instead.
    • Brown Rice: Quick microwavable packets keep this dinner fast, but any rice (or even quinoa) works.
    • Toppings: Pickled jalapeños for heat, bell peppers for crunch, dill pickles for tang, and shredded cheddar for that classic sloppy joe vibe.

    Dietary Substitutions

    • Gluten-Free: Use gluten-free Worcestershire sauce and check that your ketchup and BBQ sauces are certified gluten-free.
    • Dairy-Free: Skip the cheese or replace with a dairy-free shredded cheese alternative.
    • Vegetarian/Vegan: Swap ground chicken for lentils, crumbled tempeh, or a plant-based ground “meat.” Use vegan Worcestershire sauce and dairy-free cheese.

How to Make This Easy Sloppy Joe Bowls Recipe

    1. Preheat Oven: If using an oven for the sweet potato fries, preheat the oven to package instructions and place fries in the oven first. If using an air fryer, you will cook fries in step 5.
    2. Sauté the Onion & Garlic: In a large skillet, heat avocado oil over medium-high heat. Once the oil is heated, add the onions. Cook for about 5 minutes until softened. Add garlic and cook for another few minutes.
    3. Brown the Ground Chicken: Add in the ground chicken and break it up, cooking until fully browned and no pink remains. Add the salt, pepper, and chili powder. Mix until well combined.
    4. Add the Sauces: Add in the ketchup, BBQ sauce, Worcestershire sauce, red wine vinegar, yellow mustard, and water.
    5. Cook the Fries: Add the sweet potato fries into an air fryer and cook according to the package instructions.
    6. Simmer the Meat: Let it simmer over medium heat for 10-15 minutes or until thickened. You can add more water if the sauce is too thick!
    7. Sauté the Bell Peppers: While the meat is cooking, slice bell peppers into thin slices and saute with avocado oil in a medium-sized pan over medium heat.
    8. Cook the Rice: Place microwavable rice into the microwave and cook to package instructions.
    9. To build the bowl: Add the base of brown rice and sweet potato fries. Top with ground chicken and any toppings you would like. Enjoy!

    Dietitian Tips for Success

    • Prep for the future! Double the recipe and freeze individual portions of the sloppy joe meat for quick future meals.
    • Add beans for added nutrition. Add a can of black beans to stretch the protein and fiber content even further.
    • Want more veggies? Toss in diced zucchini, mushrooms, or spinach when cooking the meat.

    How to Serve It

I love these bowls on their own, since they really have everything you need in one bowl! They pair really well with a light side like homemade ranch for dipping the fries or a simple crunchy kale salad for added greens on the side.

    Storage Suggestions

    • Refrigerator: Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 4 days.
    • Freezer: Freeze the sloppy joe meat (without toppings) in portions for up to 3 months.
    • Reheating: Reheat gently in the microwave or on the stovetop, adding a splash of water if the sauce is too thick.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Can I meal prep these sloppy joe bowls?

Yes! Cook everything ahead of time, then store in separate containers. Assemble the bowls when ready to eat for the best texture.

Can I use a different grain?

Definitely. Quinoa, farro, or cauliflower rice all work well depending on your preferences.

Are these bowls good for kids?

Absolutely. You can tone down the spice (skip jalapeños) for a more kid-friendly version!

What’s the best way to reheat the fries?

For crispy fries, pop them back in the air fryer or oven instead of microwaving.
